The opening session will focus on the role leadership can play in the Millennium Development Goals. Currently, the United Nations and member states are making progress to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, achieve universal and primary education, promote gender equality and empower women, reduce child mortality, improve maternal health, combat HIV/AIDS and other diseases, ensure environmental sustainability and develop a global partnership for development. The Secretary General of the UN widely recognizes that closing the gap between the haves and have nots requires leadership from both the public and private sectors.

Telemedicine, the exchange of medical information from one site to another using electronic communication (telephone lines,broadband and satellite), is available for applications to support medical needs in remote and/or underserved locations.  The technology is rapidly evolving and the costs are decreasing.  However, efforts at organizing the non technical aspects are
what is holding back the field.  This panel will address the requirements for a successful program including the definition of clear needs to which the technology can be applied, as well as the organizational and legal
barriers that arise.
