International Symposium to
Promote Corporate Social Responsibility, Healthcare
Education, Technology, Responsible Media and
Competitiveness.
March 7th, 2005
10:00am . . . . . . . . . . . Opening Plenary: Millennium
Development Goals "Leadership Prescriptiveness" Conference Room 4 (Open Meeting)
|
The opening session will focus on
the role leadership can play in the Millennium
Development Goals. Currently, the United Nations and
member states are making progress to eradicate extreme
poverty and hunger, achieve universal and primary
education, promote gender equality and empower women,
reduce child mortality, improve maternal health, combat
HIV/AIDS and other diseases, ensure environmental
sustainability and develop a global partnership for
development. The Secretary General of the UN widely
recognizes that closing the gap between the haves and
have nots requires leadership from both the public and
private sectors.

. Competitiveness as
Key to Growth & Employment: What Every Country Needs to
Know Conference Room 4 (Open Meeting)
|
While access to markets dominates
the business headlines, another critical debate
concerning access to capital in a macroeconomic
environment looms. With entire regions of the world
facing serious economic challenges, countries like the
Dominican Republic, Mexico and Costa Rica find
themselves in competition with other countries for
technology and innovation, which can lead to conflict,
loss of jobs, and increased unemployment. Recently
elected with great optimism and a mandate to strengthen
the economy, President Fernandez of the Dominican
Republic addresses these issues on a daily basis. This
panel will cover access to markets, technology
innovation, macroeconomic environment and governance and
frameworks that are the pillars to creating a dynamic
economy.

Telemedicine, the exchange of
medical information from one site to another using
electronic communication (telephone
lines,broadband and
satellite), is available for applications to
support medical needs in remote and/or underserved
locations. The technology is rapidly
evolving and the costs are decreasing.
However, efforts at organizing the non technical
aspects are what is
holding back the field. This panel will
address the requirements for a successful program
including the definition of clear needs to which the
technology can be applied, as well as the
organizational and legal barriers
that arise.
